Well dressed tots are Erika Flory of Kidknits.biz, business. If you’re already familiar with her sweet & clever designs for children you’re very lucky. If you have yet to discover her extraordinary talents creating children’s knitwear clothing that is comfortable, functional and of course adorable, you’re in for a treat.
Discover her designs with these two sweet outfits that are absolutely Free! If you like what you see, and knit, check out more of her work at Kidnits Hats and Pullover & Hat Sets.

Erika’s Little Red is a hooded, finger-tip-length cape sized for toddlers 18 months to 4 years. It is worked in one piece from the bottom up in stockinette stitch with a garter stitch border. Decrease rows below the neck gather the fabric in to shape the neck, and increases worked just above the neck shape the hood. A pewter clasp fastens the cape at the neck. Our model, Anika, wore hers as part of her Halloween costume. Worn over a velvet party dress, it’s perfect for a visit to Grandma’s house (no wolves invited).

Kimono-style sweaters are an easy fit for babies: just wrap them in and tie it up! The classic kimono sweater is updated with Erika’s Sachiko Kimono Sweater with a sophisticated color combination, and the design detail of leaving slits at the side. The sweater is also designed to maximize “finish-as-you-go” techniques: the eyelet-garter band worked on the fronts eliminates the need to pick up ribbing; a three-needle bind-off finished the shoulder seams at the same time that the back neck is bound off; and the sleeves are picked up and worked from the top down, leaving only a short sleeve/side seam to sew.

Jane Thornley’s Riverstone Vest was born of rock and moss, twig and leaf, her inspiration behind this vest is organic and elemental. Jane shares the story for this vest, “The stones around my house, heaved up by glaciers in primordial times and texturized by nature over the eons, influenced the hues blended together in this tunic-length vest. When I wear it, I imagine I’ve donned a sheath of lichen like some (large) forest nymph.

Knit from carry-along yarns — those skinny, nebulous yarns like ladders or railroads designed to be held together with sturdier fare — and size 9mm/US13 needles, this will knit up quickly yet remain whisper-light despite the length. Modeled in primarily Habu yarns but any light-weight yarn will do.

Wear it belted or loose. Knit it long as in the original or make a shorter version. Eliminate the gently rounded shirt-like tails or experiment by making one in lace-weight linen or some textured filament yarn. As a free-range knitting pattern, this design just begs to be tried in different ways. Sold as an instant PDF Download, no shipping charges!

River Rock Scarf around your neck and get ready for the compliments. It is an exercise in stream of consciousness knitting. Follow your imagination as you add beaded “rocks” to the ribbed stream… or you can follow one of the four charted designs provided in the pattern.

Ilga Leja, her
Beach Collection will have you ready for summer.

Sea Urchin is an openwork shirt knit in different directions. And
Tidal Streams is a bias knit stole with drape and grace.
Berroco Bonsai SaleBerroco’s soft worsted weight ribbon yarn Bonsai was inspired by the rhythmic markings on a bamboo tree, crafted from a cellulistic fiber derived from bamboo. Its woven into a narrow ribbon that is wrapped with a delicate nylon for a touch of high sheen making it ideal for many of Ilga Leja’s scarf, shawl and wrap designs. Dyed in a palette of colors reminiscent of shades found in nature, this glistening ribbon drapes beautifully in colors that flatter many skin tones. Now On Sale for only $3.99!
Lantern MoonI’m happy to introduce Lantern Moon’s popular Silk Needle Case. This practical and beautiful case is crafted in raw and patterned silk and holds nine pairs of straight needles and eight pairs of circulars. Zippered pouch & nylon reinforced.
Pattern Tamers
Knitters follow patterns. Quite often, these patterns feature detailed line-by-line instructions and if you skip or repeat a line you end up with a mistake. Often you try to keep track of your place by making photocopies, putting checkmarks next to each row after you’ve finished, using sticky notes, paperclips or even rulers—you name it—you’ll try it. But these are only temporary solutions that lead to more frustration.
Pattern Tamers are portable magnet strips that can be placed on your pattern and slid as needed, easily keeping your place!
Thank you again for celebrating my Anniversary with me. Have a wonderful spring and enjoy the warm weather, with all the blooming flowers and trees in our yards and parks make sure to spend time with loved ones celebrating this renewal of life. Please email or call if I can assist you with any of your fiber arts needs.

Welcome the warm weather with these four new lacey knitwear designs from Ilga Leja. Introducing her Beach Collection, you’ll be ready for summer both in and out of the waves!
Mermaid is a beach poncho with an unusual stitch pattern.
At home on the beach Mermaid can be seen sporting among the waves. When a light cover up is needed, wear this beautiful beach poncho. The intriguing stitch pattern reflects the fluid transparency of Mermaid’s watery home.

Waves of Lace is a cool, lacey shell, knit in a linen silk yarn, and the perfect beach wear, don it over a bikini, tank top or T-shirt. The frothy, wave like stitch pattern echoes the gently rolling waves along the shore. The matching scarf can be worn on its own or as part of the ensemble. Knit in a satisfying, easy-to-memorize openwork pattern, the shell is self finishing.
Sea Urchin is an openwork shirt knit in different directions.
One of the most exotic, eye catching finds on any beach is the sea anemone, otherwise known as the “sea urchin.” And Ilga’s summer top, the Sea Urchin, is equally as decorative and eye catching. Sea Urchin is worked sideways in the Wave Stitch. As the final step, the lower border is picked up and knitted downward to the length which suits you best.
As rivers make their way to the ocean, swirling, flowing, they create currents and eddies and eventually merge with the sea in tidal streams. Tidal Streams is worked on the bias in a Lace Garter Stitch Pattern, which reflects the constant movement of tidal waters. The gently ruffled ends, streaming outwards, represent the melding of river and ocean.
Two versions of this pattern are included, a Scarf and a full sized Stole.

Ysolda has brought us another adorable plush toy, this time Otto, a cute baby polar bear toy knit without seams on double pointed needles. Otto was designed to be round and cuddly but still easy for little hands to grasp. He knits up quickly and the size can be varied by changing the weight of yarn used. Otto would make a wonderful gift for any kid, or adult.

Materials: 210m / 230 yards worsted weight yarn or 150m / 165 yards double knitting weight yarn.
Modeled in Debbie Bliss Rialto DK in shade 02 for the smaller version and Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton in Bone for the larger version.
Small amount of darker yarn for embroidering eyes and nose, for a toy that won’t be played with by babies or young children you could use toy safety eyes.
Set of 5 3mm double pointed needles for smaller bear knit with DK weight yarn or size 6 US (4mm) needles for larger bear knit with worsted weight yarn.
Tapestry needle.
Polyester or wool toy stuffing.
Gauge: 26 sts and 36 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch for smaller version.
20 sts and 24 rounds = 10 cm / 4” in stocking stitch for larger version.
Because size is not crucial to this project the gauge does not need to be matched exactly and the overall size can be changed by changing the yarn weight and needle size. The most important thing is to work Otto at a relatively tight gauge to create a firm fabric without holes that the stuffing can poke through. If you are using a different yarn weight you should use needles to achieve a tighter than recommended gauge.
Size: The small Otto is approximately 30cm / 12” tall and the larger Otto is approximately 53cm / 21” tall.
PDF pattern will be emailed to you after purchase.

Death by Blogging…while enjoying my breakfast the other day I was watching CNN or Fox or some such sensational, over the top news station and they were covering an article in the NY Times, or was it the Washington Post, about Death By Blogging. It appears two well known, paid bloggers, recently passed away and now the authorities are relating their heart conditions to the stress of their daily blogging. Not to make light of these deaths, my sympathies to their families and friends. But please, people of all occupations pass away everyday. Death by teaching, well that’s a reality, how many teachers are shot by a student every year. Death by practicing medicine, think abortion clinic bombings. Deaths on construction sites, OSHA isn’t just for @#&$s & giggles. Death by civil engineering? Hmmmm, anyway you get the picture.
And what about the stress of the blog reader, trying to keep up with favorite bloggers, the overwhelming sense of urgency to read and comment. And not just comment, but to think of an original witty comment that will get noticed by the blogger. Has it ever reached a point where your heart is racing, blood pressure increases, you feel faint and light headed and the eye strain has given you an unbearable headache and you’re begging for death?
Death by Reading Blogs…what will they think of next?

As part of my YMN Business Conference a couple of weeks ago in Chicago we got to tour Lorna’s Lace, where owner Beth Casey works her hand dyed magic. This was followed by a Yarn Crawl to four local shops.
We began our tours mid morning after an early start of seminars. As you can imagine there was a lot of knitting during our down time.

Waiting anxiously for our bus.

At last we arrived at Lorna’s Laces’ brick warehouse on Chicago’s near north side where upon entering I met the infamous Amanda who up until now I had only known on the phone.

Now into the studio.

Where we were greeted with scenes of drying yarn and the “Customer Cubbies,” I got to see my cubby, sorry no pic!

First Beth introduces us to her special fibers.

Than what we’ve all been waiting for, she shows us how she hand dyes her yarn.

Messy! She pours each color individually and kneads by hand to get full coverage.

After its dyed she boils it.

Dries it. And finally its hand wound into those perfect little skeins that arrive at your door.
Whew!

On our way out we were given a goodie bag with the Little Can of Paint, a yarn & sock pattern kit.

After this event we began our Yarn Crawl, first stop was Arcadia Knitting on W. Lawrence Ave where we met Anna Tillman author of Doggie Knits and designer of this adorable doggie poker scene.

The owner of Arcadia displays her yarn according to color, I’d heard of this method but had never actually seen it.

Next was nina: a well-knit shop, on West Division Street, which proved to be very urban and uber chic. This window display was crafted from register tape, I want one.
Than on to Loopy Yarns down in Printer’s Row on South State Street, a very busy & nice little shop. Sorry no pics!

And it was very late at night, and our group was much smaller, when we finally made it to Beverly to see My Sister’s Knits on S. Walden Parkway.

Our tired but happy group was still in the mood to shop!

I felt right at home at My Sister’s Knits who had not one but two giant shop dogs.

Our fearless leader Karin Strom of YMN who stayed with us to the bitter end.
Overall the conference was good, but I wish I had been able to spend more time in Chicago to visit with family and friends.

April 2008 Newsletter
The Season’s Best
Spring & Summer sees Knitwear in almost every fashion designers’ collection, it was the second most popular fabric at New York City’s Fashion Week, and the garments are showing lace, floral motifs (see the spring/summer issues of Vogue Knitting & Knitsimple), strong graphics (black, white & neutrals, again Vogue Knitting) and nautical with a new twist (Vogue’s “Shore Leave” tops, tanks & tunics in Mediterranean blues).
Femininity takes center stage in many silhouettes, add flirty details with lace, ruffles, pleats, draping, smocking & openwork to your projects, Ysolda’s detailed, rounded yoke Coraline cardigan is a wonderful example. The flattering high-waisted empire waist tops are wardrobe musts and Lily Go is back with a new design in this classic, her Empire Top. My trip is winding down and I find myself in cold Cleveland! One of my cousins was married in Puerto Rico a few months ago and now the entire family is here for a stateside reception. So we’re all having a ball seeing one another, my little nephews have never met their second cousins before and others have not seen each other in over a decade. Even more people are due to show up today so the fun is just beginning.
I have a wonderful idea on writing/compiling a Family Cookbook. I for see lots of family recipes, photos, funny stories all broken up into chapters corresponding with where we are from and currently reside. If anyone has had any experience with this PLEASE comment or email me! Thanks.
BTW I’ve visited the Rock N Roll museum years ago and probably won’t have time to go back during this trip, but I highly recommend the place if you’ve got the time.

I’ve been in Chicago since Monday the 24th attending the Yarn Market News business conference for LYS owners. Despite being the only online retailer to attend I found it interesting and a wonderful source of networking and may have some new and exciting products to introduce. I’m working on a longer blog with lots of pics! We toured Lorna’s Laces yesterday and I have some fabulous photos of Beth Casey working her magic on some yarn!

La Lana Wools’ lush and unique Caspian Kush Shawl, designed by Linda Romens, brought actual applause at the Stitches West 2008 fashion show. It’s drop dead gorgeous, elegant and very, very up town.
What makes it stand out from other shawls is the incredible fringe made of Handspun Ultra Finissimo Wensleydale with its long adorable curls. Fiber of this quality requires great concentration and ability on the part of the grower. And represents 35 years of breeding techniques. La Lana Wools is proud to offer it and had Linda design this shawl to showcase it.
Of course being Linda, it also has a beautiful Lace pattern that plays peek-a-boo with your shoulders and a bold mosaic edging. There! lost of different knitting techniques for an interesting knit.
Measurements & Price: There are two versions of this Shawl One Size Fits All With the Handspun Ultra Finissimo Wensleydale Fringe or One Size Fits All Without Fringe
Sold as a Pattern only for $15 or as a Kit. Kit includes Pattern and yarns in colorways shown, Forever Random Worsted Nublado, edged with Phat Silk Phat. The optional Handspun Ultra Finissimo Wensleydale fringe is sewn on last.

Vogue’s goal with this issue is to provide you with a spectrum of designs that can be knitted up quickly, so you can look fab come the dog days (see, among their many VEVV patterns, Cathy Carron’s yellow-rific stunner and Dawn Leeseman’s blue V neck). Summer is the time we all have a little extra breathing room to take on more serious projects. The wedding-fashion story “The White Way” exemplifies these types of projects. Whether you’re a bride-to- be or intend to be, cast on for Michele Rose Orne’s diva Moonlight Garden coat. Speaking of divas, and only in the nicest way possible, Vogue is happy to introduce you to Rebecca Taylor, one of the heroes in the fashion industry. Her featured dress is just an inkling of what is coming in future issues.
Also as a knitter, you’re curious every time a new type of fiber hits the scene; in recent years that has meant a wide range of eco-friendly yarns. Take a look at the Natural Selection section and the fashion story “Ecologic” for seasonless projects that are good for both the environment and your wardrobe.
In This Issue:
NICKY EPSTEIN: IT’S IN THE BAG Every woman should have a beautiful bag to carry on her wedding day. If it’s knitted (and big enough to stash a lot of loot), so much the better. Nicky explains the handiwork behind her beaded bridal bag.
MEG SWANSEN: WEDDINGS AND KNITTING TIE A KNOT In Latvia, says knitting historian Lizbeth Upitis, a girl could prove herself worthy of marriage through the quality and quantity of the mittens she knit. Meg teams up with Lizbeth to break down the colorwork technique behind this ornate tradition.
LOVE IS KNITTING, KNITTING IS LOVE We say it’s time for a new tradition: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue—and now, something knitted. KnitKnit’s Sabrina Gschwandtner toasts the growing trend of knitted weddings.

VK INTRODUCES REBECCA TAYLOR Style-setters Cameron, Uma, Cate, Reese and Sarah Jessica swear by her patented take on grown-up girl power. New Zealand-born designer Rebecca Taylor now brings her fairytale fierceness to VK. Plus: A designer Q&A.
SPOTLIGHT ON: AMIGURUMI Crafters worldwide are turning Japanese, creating amigurumi, adorable stuffed critters fashioned with great imagination and a healthy dose of kawaii (Japanese for “cute”). By Leigh Witche
SHIRLEY PADEN: THE SHAPE OF LACE In Part 2 of her tutorial, designer Shirley Paden shows knitters how to apply their new lace-making skills to garment construction.

LILY M. CHIN: WAISTING AWAY “I hear this complaint over and over again: Sweaters are too boxy, too shapeless—especially in plus sizes. Yet with the smallest amount of waist shaping you can fake an hourglass figure, even if you have no waist to speak of.” Lily Chin shows how simple alterations can turn a square silhouette into one that hugs your curves.

Dawn Brocco has always loved flowers, and floral brooches are always popular embellishments that easily make a hand knit or off the rack garment unique, thus she was inspired to design her own line of Floral Brooches, a rose, sunflower and lilac (all three are included in this pattern). This is Dawn’s story…”My aim was to make the flowers look more realistic than some I’ve seen. In this pattern, the Lilac Brooch comes closest to that goal. As I neared the end of designing these three, I realized that there are more flowers I want to try, but which will need to go into a separate pattern. So, this is just the beginning!”

The Rose and Sunflower are both easy. The beading at the center of the sunflower is stitched on afterwards– so there’s no threading or hooking on beads. The Lilac is a bit more complex, but do-able for a intermediate knitter or even an eager beginner. It looks far more complicated than it actually is to make, as the pieces are knit separately, then joined.
Size: Range of 4-5.5″ width and length
Yarn: Peace Fleece Worsted (for the Old Rose and Lilac) and Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Worsted, used double (for the Sunflowers)
Needles: US size 8 (5mm)
Sunflowers use small amounts of Mill Hill size 3/0 (5.5mm) pebble glass beads
Gauge: 16 sts and 28 rows = 4″ (10 cm) in St st using size 8 needles and 20 sts and 30 rnds = 4″ in St st using size 6 needles (or sizes to give gauges).
Substitute Yarn Wt: Heavy worsted and worsted used double
Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
